Beautiful photos. Love the landscapes. Are you bracketing your images?

Hi Julie – if you mean bracketing them and then merging them (such as HDR), then no, I am not. I do often take multiple exposures though to “get it right” and get it as close to what I want in camera.

Hi Ian – that is what I meant by bracketing. Thanks for answering. If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of camera do you use? I have the Canon 30D and am working through the menus now. I just returned from Yellowstone last week taking landscapes and did bracket but haven’t merged due to a bit of a moral dilemma I have with it. Your exposures are truly breathtaking so any advice/tips you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

I seen you on Current. Honestly , that was the first I have heard of you. Very Impressive short story. I would love to see the places you have been. I am proud of pictures of nature I have taken myself..You are a inspiration! Thank you for sharing.

Hi Ian, I picked up your book from B&N the other day. It was the first time I saw it, while browsing through photography book as I always do for inspiration and I have to say I fell in love with it. Your pictures have given me something to strive for in my photography.
I am currently exploring the use of filters in my photography. I was wondering if you could please educate me as to what filters do you use, i.e what brand and what holders? Currently, the only way I have been able to create a dynamic picture with hilites and shadows properly exposed is by means of HDR. But as you mention, it creates a very “artificial” image. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hey there – I use Lee Filters but I know other brands are good such as Singh-Ray and Cokin (less expensive but not quite as good in my opinion). The holders are all made by the same respective companies. I use ND .3 .6 and .9 and stack them and typically use hard edge filters but also sometimes use soft.

I use Canon equipment – everything you see on my site and in my book are shot on the Canon 5D. The 30D is a great camera.
I have the same moral dilemma with merging and to be honest – I’ve tried it but felt my results were pretty artificial. I use neutral density filters which are not only widely accepted in the ethics department, but help me manage my exposures/contrast/tonal ranges.
